This is a coin minted to honor Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the father of modern India, the political and spiritual leader of India, and the leader of the Indian Independence Movement. It is to commemorate the 100th year (centennial) anniversary of his birth.

An English-educated lawyer, Gandhi helped lead India in resistance to British rule through mass peaceful civil disobedience inspiring change not only in India but inspiring movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

Gandhi was married to Kasturba Makhanji and they had four sons Harilal Gandhi, Manilal Gandhi, Ramdas Gandhi, Devdas Gandhi. At the age of 36 he gave up sexual intercourse.

As the leader of the Indian National Congress, Gandhi led a nationwide campaign for the alleviation of poverty, for the liberation of Indian women, for brotherhood amongst communities of differing religions and ethnicity, for an end to untouchability and caste discrimination, and for the economic self-sufficiency of India.

He was assassinated on January 30, 1948 by an extremist Hindu angered over concessions made to Pakistan.
