NORWAY 50 ORE 1975

KM 418 Modern Norwegian 50 ORE Depicting a Crowned Lion Wielding an Axe on a Shield, the Coat of Arms of Norway

This 50 Ore coin (also called a 15 Skilling) was minted under the reign of King Olav V of Norway, a constitutional monarchy on the Scandinavian peninsula.

On the Obverse is the crowned lion wielding and ax on a shield which serves as the Coat of Arms of Norway. One of the oldest coat of arms in Europe, a variation of this image has been used by Norwegian rulers since 1280 when King Eirik Magnussen added the crown and silver (argent) axe to the lion. The axe is the martyr axe of St. Olav, the weapon used to kill him in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030. The date is 1975 (this coin was minted from 1974 to 1996)

On the Reverse is the denomination 50 ORE, 'Norge' (Norway), and mint marks. Mint Official Initials AB for Arne Jon Bakken, Crossed Hammer to Represent the Kongsburg Mint
