STADT PIRMASENS (GERMAN) 10 PFENNIG 1919

L- 413.10 Administration of the City of Pirmasens (German) 10 Kleingeldersatzmarke Coin Depicting a Ladies Shoe.

This iron coin was issued by the Administration of the City of Pirmasens and was meant to be used as small change. Pirmasens is a city located in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with France. The city is named after St. Pirminius, the founder of a cloister that originally settled the area around 860.

Although the city boasts a wide array of industry, as the coin might suggest, Pirmasens is famous for the manufacture of shoes. Not only is it home to the oldest shoe factory in Germany, it is also the home of a museum dedicated to shoes.
