Sacagawea was a Shoshone woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark in their exploration of the Western United States. She offered geographic guidance in areas where she had lived as a child. She also instructed them on which plants were edible or useful to the party and translated when they met the Shoshone which was the original purpose for her being with the party.
