Singapore has a long ancient history as an area of ports and people of the sea. In more modern times Singapore has been under the control of the British, the Japanese, and Malaysia until gaining independence in 1965. The relationship between Singapore and the ocean is illustrated on much of its coinage that depict various sea creatures. Singapore has undergone rapid industrialization and now the ancient temples and humble shacks stand in juxtaposition to the grand high-rises built by thriving new industry.
